Why Google Plus Hangouts Will Change the Way We Interact
Google Plus Hangouts are about to change the way you and I talk. When I say “you and I” I do literally mean you and I. There are a few new things coming your way via this website that you are going to enjoy and that will contribute to your quest as a livelong learner, but you are going to need Google+.
This is not the first time I have mentioned Google Plus. In a previous post, I discussed the importance of becoming active on Google Plus. You can read that post here.
Google Plus Hangouts will soon change the way we talk to one another in business and in our personal lives. The tools Google Plus Hangouts offer will make attending a meeting via the web less complicated and will save you time and money.
When you think Google Plus Hangouts, think Skype, Webex, GoToMeetings and other web conference tools plus much more. Thus the Plus after Google! Google Plus is actually spelled “Google+” by Google, so that is how I will refer to it going forward.
It all begins with a Google Account
Many of us have Google Accounts for Gmail, but if you do not have a Google account, the time has come. You will need open to access Google+ to access Google+ Hangouts and other powerful Google tools. Many of Google’s other powerful tools like Gmail, Calendar, YouTube and Google Drive (a place to store files) are all tied back to your Google account.
To get started with a Google Account, follow this link and register: https://accounts.google.com/SignUp
I recommend that you simply use your name as your account name or your @Gmail.com name. If your name is Jane Doe than simply make your Gmail firstname.lastname@example.org. If the name is already taken it may take a few tries to find something close as Google will not assign a name that can be confused with an existing user’s name.
Once you have signed up you have access to the Google kingdom.
Creating a Google+ profile
To create a Google+ profile go to https://plus.google.com/up/start/
Be prepared to have a profile photo you would like to share on Google+. This photo will appear everywhere you will use the Google tools, but especially as you use Google+ and Google+ Hangouts.
Rather than reinvent the wheel, I am going to send you to a link I found on Wordtracker.com that already does a great job explaining How to Create a Google+Profile.
Familiarize Yourself with Google+
Take time now to understand Google+. Google offers many introductory write-ups and videos on Google+, but let me get you a few observations:
- Google+ is not Facebook – The interaction on Google+ is less “all about me” and more “all about us working together”
- Google+ is image driven – When you post on Google+ be prepared with a relevant image or photo. As of right now, Google+ tends NOT be the place to post a “Hey, I am drunk on the beach!” shot (which I never recommend; ever).
- Google+ tends to be a place to drive thoughts and ideas – You will surely see self-promotion, but my observation is that Google+ makes me think more than Facebook does. Facebook helps me catch up with friends and family, Google+ helps me see others thoughts.
Trying Google+ Hangouts
The way I typically learn is by doing, so I recommend either starting a Hangout or dropping in on one. To do this you should be prepared with headphones and a microphone for your computer, but it is not 100% necessary. The problem with not using a headphone and mike is that ambient noise in your home will be picked up on the computer’s microphone and the headphones will eliminating the sound of others on the computer talking from bouncing around the room and back into the microphone.
